The Family Vibes - Strange Fruit

OK, any record cover that says "Ike Turner presents" has my attention. In this case he presents the band "The Family Vibes" and the album is called "Strange Fruit." Ike's backing band was originally called The Kings of Rhythm and changed it to The Family Vibes. Ike and the Kings of Rhythm recorded an album prior to this entitled A Black Man's Soul that is a very stripped down soulful funk album that I highly recommend. The Family Vibes' Strange Fruit has a much richer full sound than A Black Man's Soul possibly because the quality of the recording is far better. A Black Man's Soul sounds like it was recorded on an answering machine tape but it is raw, gritty and soulful. Another album I recommend is In Person by Ike & Tina Turner and the Ikettes. It's a live recording from San Francisco and they really do a killer show of mostly popular song covers and a few originals .

The song from Strange Fruit that I chose to share is called D.M.Z. This song is very different than most funk songs. I am not sure why, but it just has a different vibe and quality to it. Different and dope which is what I am out there digging for really.

D.M.Z.
